Suitable trees for small gardens

Trees in the third size category, up to a maximum height of 6 metres, will almost always fit in a small garden unless they happen to be one the extremely wide-growing species. Tree species in the second size category whose crown remains narrow, such as those with vase-shaped or narrow pyramidal crown shapes, are suitable for planting in small gardens. Apart from the choice of species, there is also a selection of tree shapes. Almost all trees are cultivated in the standard clear stem form but there are species such as Carpinus betulus, which are also available as shaped trees. From cylindrical and block on stem to multi-stem roof tree, there are plenty of possibilities. Finally, espaliers and pleached screens are also suitable for small gardens. They are ideal for planting in a front garden or up against a fence or garden wall.
