A tree can only thrive at its ultimate location if the latter is high quality aboveground and beneath the surface. A compact, densely rooted root-ball plays a major part. At Van den Berk Nurseries, the trees are replanted on a regular basis which encourages the production of new rootlets in order to form fine root systems. For digging up and replanting large sized trees, Van den Berk has developed their own giant digging machine. It can form root balls with a diameter of 250 cm in order to assure a good balance between aboveground and underground parts of the tree, for large trees as well.

Balanced crown

Intensive support pruning assures a balanced, structurally sound crown. Van den Berk trees are known for their well-branched crowns with distinct permanent branches. These crowns form a solid foundation for future growth. The trees can grow into impressive mature specimens that are unlikely to cause problems in the future. With large-sized trees, most of the ultimate crown is already shaped at the nursery. These trees need less support and maintenance pruning at the new location. That affects maintenance costs and also makes the trees less dependent on the quality and frequency of the pruning sessions.
